This colorful custom shade canopy was inspired by the aesthetics and functionality of large festival shade structures produced by companies like the do-lab at Lightning in a Bottle. The intention was to create an enclosed feel in the outside courtyard while enhancing the aesthetic vibe and further developing the brand identity of the Wicked west venue. This challenging build was the first shade structure of this size that I designed and build and used a variety of materials and techniques to come to a final solutions. Custom fabricated steel posts either welded onto the sides of a shipping container on site and the other side implemented concrete anchors to span the 40 ft courtyard. Tension across stainless steel cable created the infrastructure to suspend strings of bulb lights and a series of over thirty 20x20 triangle shades ordered directly from a supplier in La. The colors were chosen to interplay with existing murals on site and even the paint colors on the bathroom doors. The slant of the shades were set to block the daylight of the passing sun and allow water to shed off after rain. Other features included a large disco ball for evening music events and provides shade for events like weddings and cornhole tournaments. Connor Whitehead with Boo Sparks Creations was an integral part in the execution of this build
