The lighthouse was just an idea that was brought into reality at Burning man 2023. The symbol of the lighthouse has been a powerful one for me. I have lived by the beach for most all of my life and the lighthouse acts as a beacon to those lost at sea or protect ships from the dangers of rocks on a shoreline. Throughout developing my craft in geometric wood sculpture it was a great intersection of a functional climbing structure and intricate wood sculpture. It was an amazing opportunity to showcase this work on the playa and then tour it to SSBD before installing it at its current desert home in Jacumba CA. The fabrication is a combination of plywood subflooring and recycled scrap wood. The pieces were hand cut and the hexagonal cross section developed geometric patterns that resonated with spatial patterns found in nature. The majority of the build was improvised but considerations for transportation installation and reuse were made with the intention of quick set up and minimal storage and transportation issues. The upper portion of the lighthouse was intended as a multi purpose outlook and meeting point for people to hang out and make new connections. The lower section is partly enclosed to provide shelter from the storm and allow for exploration and interactive elements. At ssbd it was used as a feature in the treasure hunt game developed by Jesse Orlando where a clue was left in a puzzle inside the structure. One of my favorite installations I have made to date and always love visiting it and hearing the stories of people who had special experiences and created memories in this artwork I built. I’ve heard that it was a safe haven for people to escape the overstimulation of the festival and find absences of calm and peace withen its walls.
